A vacuum head, hose, and pole let you target problem areas. It is inexpensive and useful after storms, but it requires your time and relies on the pool’s circulation system.

Suction cleaner

Uses the pump and filter

Connects to a skimmer or dedicated suction line. Debris travels into the pump basket or an inline canister, and fine material reaches the pool filter.

Pressure cleaner

Uses return-side water

Connects to a pressure line and may require a booster pump. It collects debris in its own bag, keeping larger material out of the pool filter.

Robotic cleaner

Self-contained cleaning

Uses its own power, drive system, brushes, and filter basket. It operates independently from the pool pump and may clean the floor, walls, or waterline depending on the model.

Pressure

Watch for: booster-pump cost on some systems, bag and hose maintenance, and adjustments needed for balanced movement.

Robotic

Watch for: higher purchase price, lifting weight, cord management or battery care, and model-specific repair support.

A better cleaning routine

Let the cleaner do the work it was built to do

  1. Empty baskets first. Start with clear skimmer and pump baskets so suction and circulation are dependable.
  2. Skim large debris. Remove branches, toys, and oversized leaves that can jam a cleaner or fill its basket immediately.
  3. Brush problem areas. Steps, corners, tile lines, and behind ladders may still need manual attention even with an automatic cleaner.
  4. Run the correct cycle. Follow the manual for valve positions, pump speed, cycle length, and removal procedure.
  5. Clean the cleaner. Empty and rinse bags, baskets, or cartridges after use. Inspect tracks, brushes, wheels, hoses, and swivels for wear.
  6. Store it correctly. Protect hoses, cords, power supplies, and batteries from avoidable sun, heat, tangling, and chemical exposure.

Troubleshooting

Before assuming the cleaner is broken

It barely moves

  • Clean the cleaner’s basket, bag, or intake
  • Check pump flow for suction or pressure models
  • Inspect hoses, swivels, tracks, belts, and wheels
  • Confirm the model is set up for the correct pool and cycle

It misses sections

  • Brush or remove obstacles
  • Correct hose length and float placement
  • Reposition the robotic cleaner before starting
  • Confirm the model is designed for walls, waterline, steps, or the pool shape

It loses suction

  • Empty skimmer, pump, and inline canister baskets
  • Check the filter pressure and return flow
  • Look for hose air leaks or a worn connection
  • Rebalance valves without starving the pump

The robot stops

  • Check the power source, cord, basket, and impeller area as the manual permits
  • Use the handle—not the cable—to remove it
  • Stop if there is damaged wiring, a wet power supply, or repeated electrical fault

Electrical and swimming safety

Follow the cleaner manual and local electrical requirements. Keep the power supply in its required dry location, use the specified protected outlet, and do not swim while a corded robotic cleaner is operating. Disconnect power before service, and never pull a cleaner out by its cable.
