How to Identify Pool Stains Before Treating Them

Brown, green, black, blue, or white marks can come from organics, metals, scale, algae, or damaged surfaces. The right first move is identification—not adding a random chemical.

Important: Never mix chlorine products with acid. Do not perform an acid wash or aggressive spot treatment unless you understand the surface, product label, protective equipment, and disposal requirements.

Is the water colored—or the surface stained?

Colored water

If clean water in a white container also looks tinted, investigate dissolved metals, suspended algae, source-water contaminants, and overall water balance.

A surface mark

If the water looks clear but a wall, step, or floor is discolored, document the color, texture, location, recent changes, and pool-surface material.

What different stains can suggest

Organic

Leaves, tannins, and debris

Often brown or irregular and found where leaves, acorns, bark, berries, or soil sat on the surface.

Metal

Iron or copper

Iron can create rusty brown staining. Copper can contribute blue-green, gray, or dark staining, especially after oxidation or a water-balance change.

Mineral

Calcium scale

Usually pale, whitish, and rough rather than simply discolored. Scale points toward water-balance and saturation issues.

Growth

Algae or biofilm

Black spots in pores, yellow dust-like patches, or slimy growth should be evaluated as a biological problem rather than a simple stain.

Surface

Etching or discoloration

Plaster mottling, worn paint, fiberglass discoloration, and chemically damaged surfaces may not respond to stain remover.

Fill water or equipment

Well water, corroding heater components, metal-based products, and some pool devices can introduce iron or copper.

Six steps that prevent the wrong treatment

  1. Photograph and map the stain. Record its color, feel, size, and exact location.
  2. Test the full water balance. Include pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, sanitizer, and stabilizer. Test iron and copper when metals are plausible.
  3. Review recent events. New fill water, shock treatment, heater problems, algaecide, fertilizer, leaves, and rapid pH changes are useful clues.
  4. Identify the surface. Plaster, pebble, vinyl, fiberglass, tile, and painted finishes have different treatment tolerances.
  5. Use only a surface-appropriate controlled test. Follow a manufacturer’s label or have a professional perform the spot test.
  6. Treat the cause and the mark. Removing a stain without controlling the source allows it to return.

Diagnosis comes before chemistry

A stain remover chosen by color alone can bleach a finish, move metals temporarily, or make the real cause harder to see. Confirm whether the problem is organic, metallic, mineral, biological, or structural first.

  • the pool has a dark, colored, painted, vinyl, or fiberglass finish;
  • the stain appeared after heater corrosion or a major chemistry event;
  • an acid wash or drain is being considered;
